Israel claims Syria supplied Hezbollah WASHINGTON -- U.S. and Israeli intelligence officials claim to have evidence that Syria directly supplied Hezbollah militants in Lebanon with missiles to fight Israel. Hezbollah fired between 3,700 and 3,800 rockets into northern Israel killing 43 people during 34 days of fighting that ended Aug. 14 with a U.N.-imposed cease-fire. Now, Israeli officials say forensic evidence from shell fragments point directly at Syrian manufacture, The Los Angeles Times said. "Syria has been a direct supplier of rockets, as well as a safe haven and weapons conduit," said Miri Eisen, a senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Both U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies were aware before the war Syria was allowing Iranian arms to pass through on its way to Lebanon, but this is the first evidence Syria directly provided medium-range missiles, the report said. A spokesman for the Syrian Embassy in Washington disputed the allegations, telling the Times: "These are just accusations. If they have evidence, they should make it clear."
