Ford's credit arm cutting jobs Toronto Star | September 29, 2006 Ford Credit Canada Ltd. is cutting jobs and consolidating operations as part of a North American restructuring by its U.S.-based parent. The company employs about 600 workers in Canada, but an official for its U.S. parent said they won't know the number of job reductions here until the end of the first quarter. Ford Motor Credit said it will cut 2,000 of 8,600 jobs, or about 23 per cent, in Canada and the U.S. in efforts to reduce costs and improve process efficiencies. "The final structure for Ford Credit Canada has not been determined," said spokesperson Chris Solie. "Extra time is needed to resolve unique Canadian operating issues, especially as they relate to multiple time zones and language needs." About half of the staff of Ford Credit Canada work at a service centre in Edmonton. The company also has offices in Toronto, London, Ottawa, Halifax, Vancouver and Montreal. In the U.S., Ford is combining 59 branches with six service centres. The parent company said it is considering a similar structure in Canada. Ford indicated it will reduce jobs through attrition, early retirement, voluntary separation and layoffs, if necessary. CLICK ON THE BANNER TO BUY TERRORSTORM IN HARD COPY |
