Dial 911 To Report Smokers KETV 7 Omaha | September 28, 2006 OMAHA, Neb. -- Residents who see someone light up in Omaha on Monday are urged to call emergency workers. Police said that when the city's new smoking ban kicks in, 911 dispatchers will be ready to deal with the calls. Police will respond, and people found breaking the law will be given a criminal citation or a fine that could reach $500 for subsequent offenses. Business owners who knowingly allow smoking in their establishment can also be cited, although police said the first offense will garner only a warning. Not all businesses will have to crack down, though. The smoking ban passed by the Omaha City Council allows a five-year grace period for bars that don't serve food, for keno parlors and for Horsemen's Park, a thoroughbred racetrack.
