JonesReport.com | November 21, 2007 John Gibson goes to bat for Rudy Giuliani on his Fox radio show, obviously aware that the gun-grabbing mayor isn't really resonating with the conservative based he pretends to have locked up. Gibson dispels a reporter's conception that Southern NASCAR fans wouldn't support Giuliani given his record of gun control, pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage. For Gibson, these issues are set aside because a Southern man-- John imagines-- likes to "kick butt" and Rudy is ready-set to "kick butt" against terrorists, so he would find support in their ranks. The 17% of the electorate who are NASCAR fans have shown support for Giuliani, who recently made a pit stop at a race to wave to the people Gibson would reduce to simplistic war-hungry morons, but a recent Zogby poll shows that Ron Paul's message resonates with NASCAR enthusiasts even more. In 2004, 9 of the top 10 drivers endorsed George W. Bush, and Giuliani is hoping for a quick pick up of those votes. Gibson claims Giuliani's gun control in New York is justified, claiming Rudy only wants to stop "those kids with 9mms from menacing you" and isn't really against guns... especially with Hillary Clinton in the field of comparison. But for many Southern voters, the 2nd Amendment is personally and they may not buy it. Gibson suggests that none would dare focus on Rudy's many flaws because "voting for anybody but Rudy is like voting for Hillary." The Fox host is obviously annoyed by a caller who disagrees with the reductive logic of 'lesser of two gun controllers,' so he just refers to Ron Paul's supporters as a "nut camp." But it's clear Giuliani looks uncomfortably out of place with his NASCAR constituents and his support there could be a shaky foundation he's taking for granted, especially under a closer inspection.
