Aaron Dykes / JonesReport | May 21, 2007 Austin, TX - A brief press conference during a campaign stop by Congressman Ron Paul-- leading in the Republican race for the Presidency-- meant an opportunity to to call for an end to the Iraq War, hopes for a cease fire and plans to bring the troops home as soon as possible. But the larger problem-- Ron Paul pointed out-- lies in the betrayal of traditional non-entanglement with foreign nations in our current foreign policy-- going against the advice of the Founding Fathers. "This actually did not start with this administration nor the previous administration. This has been smoldering for about 100 years. It was Woodrow Wilson that said 'We as Americans will make the world safe for democracy.' And look what's happened since World War I," Ron Paul said. Ron Paul stresses personal liberty and diplomacy over government control and American empire as the driving force in foreign policy.
"The founders were absolutely right on this issue-- that if you talk with people and make friends with people and trade with people, we're much better off than trying to impose our will on them." Congressman Paul also comments that he believes other candidates in his party have "dug themselves into a hole" because more than 70% of Americans are now against the Iraq War and the current foreign policy. Yet, Paul says, "all the other Republican candidates say just dig in your heels, keep doing the same thing over and over again." He also believes Democrats have offered nothing as an alternative. "As a physician, I was always taught, if you give the wrong diagnosis, the wrong treatment, just doing more of the same does nothing to help the patient," Paul said, drawing a parallel between his career as a medical doctor and applying policy to correct a problem in government relations.
He also addressed concerns about plans for a world government, sometimes referred to as a 'new world order.' "I think even our first President Bush said that the New World Order was in tune and that's what they were working for. The U.N. is part of that government. They're working right now very significantly for a North American Union-- that's why there are a lot of people in Washington right now who don't care too much about our borders. They have a philosophic belief that national sovereignty is not important. It's also the reason that I have made very strong suggestion that we need not be in the United Nations for our national security," Congressman Paul said. Later, during his speech inside the event, Ron Paul cited that while some welfare-- mostly crumbs-- go to the poor, most welfare actually goes to "the military industrial complex and to bankers," a problem he would address as President. Paul vows to wean those dependent on government from its subsidies in favor of promoting personal liberty and a true free market economy. Congressman Paul won the first two televised debates leading up to the Republican primary and dominates nearly every poll pitting him against a field of establishment candidates who offer little or no substantial departure from current foreign policy, particularly in regards to the Iraq War and a looming war with Iran. He has stood out so much from his milquetoast competition that members of the GOP and the GOPAC committees have petitioned to ban him from future debates. Strong opposition to banning the Congressman has silenced such undemocratic practices for the time being. His entire speech during the campaign event can be seen at PrisonPlanet.tv.
