Israel to have access to U.S. National Ballistic Missile Defense System

Bruce Stewart / JonesReport.com | December 21, 2007

In an unprecedented move the U.S. House passed a proposal authored by U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk R-Ill that was part of the Defense Authorization Act that will give Israel access to the U.S. National Ballistic Missile Defense System.

The Defense Authorization Act passed the House of Representatives late Wednesday and is expected to be considered for a vote by the Senate before Christmas break.

Under the proposal, the secretary of defense must within six months present a plan to Congress to improve the coordination, interoperability, and integration of the U.S. National Ballistic Missile Defense System with Israel’s missile defense architecture.

A statement on Rep. Kirks House web site says that “Such a plan will help defend Israel against reported plans by Iran to build missiles that can reach Israel. The statement goes on to say that "Israel will be the first and only country to fully integrate with the American missile defense architecture”. "It is a symbol of our shared values and a safer 21st century."

Israel and the U.S. are allies but allowing any Nation access the most sophisticated Ballistic Missile Defense System in the world as got to raise a few eyebrows even in Washington.
