NYPD and Mayor Bloomberg conspire to ban geiger counters Martin Mellor / JonesReport.com | January 31, 2008 Village Voice: NYPD Seeks an Air Monitor Crackdown for New Yorkers In a move to further restrict the right of citizens of New York to protect themselves Mayor Bloomberg and NYPD's Richard Falkenrath have asked the council to make it necessary to hold a permit in order to own a geiger counter. This move also covers biological and chemical detectors. "There are currently no guidelines regulating the private acquisition of biological, chemical, and radiological detectors" Falkenrath said. A geiger counter is a device that measures radiation, and not in itself radio active or dangerous in any way. But that didn't stop Bloomberg and Falkenrath inventing a hypothetical scenario where faulty geiger counters could give false alarms and create public panic. "Our mutual goal is to prevent false alarms . . . by making sure we know where these detectors are located, and that they conform to standards of quality and reliability." The penalty for using a detector without a permit will be a jail sentence according to Falkenrath. If this is allowed to pass it will not only stop private citizens from protecting themselves it will effectively stop independent groups from monitoring their local environment for pollution. This move will, according to Falkenrath not include groups of parents concerned about asthma in their children, but will they be issued a permit if they vocally disagree with the EPA when they give assurances that everything is safe? I doubt it. CLICK ON THE BANNER TO BUY TERRORSTORM IN |
